Pharmacy Assistant

The Pharmacy Assistants help Licensed Pharmacists provide clients with medication and other healthcare products. Pharmacy Assistants perform routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medications, such as counting tablets and labeling bottles. They also perform administrative duties such as answering phones, stocking shelves, and operating cash registers.

In addition, this program is designed to prepare the students with the skills and knowledge they will require to become a pharmacy assistant. Students will become familiar with pharmacology, pharmacy math, and pharmacy billing software.

Pharmacy Assistants play a vital role in a drugstore or pharmacy operation. Students will be able to:

• Experience ingenuity within the field as they formulate standard products such as medicinal lozenges, powders, creams, tablets, capsules, and suppositories.

• Learn basic human anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and medical terminology to help students identify the significant classifications of medicines to treat different conditions.

• Understand the scope of responsibilities, code of ethics, and legal and regulatory requirements in the pharmacy industry.

• Ensure that the proper medication or prescription products released are accurate and that there is no tampering.

• Assist the pharmacists in compiling the best possible medication histories for patients, referring to the pharmacist patients who require assessment, clinical interventions, or therapeutic use and knowledge application.

Pharmacy Assistant is a full-time 54 weeks duration or equivalent to 2 years with a total of 1,080hours. This includes field experience and practicum/clinical of 200 hours in various settings like community or retail pharmacies/drugstores, acute/sub-acute hospitals, and long-term care facilities.

Standard Admissions

Students must meet ALL of the following criteria

• Alberta high school diploma, verified by transcript, with 50% or better in Grade 12 English and a Grade 12 Mathematics or non-Alberta equivalent OR

• Successful completion of the General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) with a standard score of 450 or better in English and Mathematics

• Successful test result on Wonderlic Exam

• Successful interview with the Admission Adviser.

• C.P.R. & First Aid certificates.

Mature Admissions

• Students must meet ALL of the following criteria

• Be at least 18 years of age before admission

• Successful test result on Wonderlic Exam

• Alberta high school diploma with 50% or better in Grade 10 English and in Grade 10 Mathematics OR

• Non-Alberta equivalent

• Successful interview with the Admission Adviser

• C.P.R. & First Aid certificates

English Proficiency- if the first language is not English, you must demonstrate English language proficiency requirements for more details or must present one of the following:

- IELTS (International English Language Testing System)- Academic with a minimum overall band score of 6.0 (ielts.org)

- Canadian Language Benchmark with a score of not less than 7.
